Just to be clear, here are the four assignments leading to EXHIBICIÓN (Tues. Nov 3):
1. Calavera #1: is about a person's profession or occupation (a skier, a baker, etc). The final product will be refined, written by hand cleanly and on the same paper as Calavera #2 and handed in. (20 pts) 2. Calavera #2: is about a real person who you're having fun describing as a calavera. (A celebrity, a teacher, a politician.) (20 pts) CALAVERAS are due no later than THURSDAY (Oct. 29), already refined and written on one piece of paper by hand. (Please don't use Google translate or we will hand these back to you. If you can't translate it back to us in English, then it's not written at YOUR level, which is all we ask!) 3. Description of your relative/pet/famous person on the Ofrenda de la clase in the back of the classroom. This must be REFINED (corrected) and written beautifully by hand on one of the frames and attached to a picture of that person. The latest this can be finished is MONDAY, Nov. 2. (We should have seen these and helped with refinement before that day.) (15 pts) 4. Calavera Artística: a rendition of ONE OF YOUR CALAVERA POEMS in art form. You can use the cut out skeleton or draw your own. This must be in our hands by Tuesday during class so we can display these at EXHIBICIÓN. (20 pts) 5. EXHIBICIÓN is at the Animas City Theater on Tuesday evening (Nov. 3) from 5-8 p.m. Wear black and yellow if possible, otherwise dark colors; meet school dress code but a little bit nicer. There will be food for sale, face-painting, some Dia de los Muertos crafts, art show of your calaveras pictures and poems, class ofrendas featuring your relatives/pets, dancing by Ballet Folklórico, and a showing of the movie "Book of Life" with free popcorn starting around 6:30. Families are welcome! 6. D.P Update after EXHIBICIÓN: Please take photos during exhibición so you have something to post in class when we do a DP update on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Mainly you'll recount what our Dia de los Muertos celebration was like.

Trabajamos sobre las dos calaveras. Here's the RUBRIC for the proyecto. We will end up with two finished calaveras literarias (two "poems"-- one about a profession, and the other about a famous person and each is WORTH 20 points plus a calavera artística (another 20 pts.) Today was a work day on this project. Miércoles: Spent all period creating our CALAVERA #1. Turned it in for revision feedback.
Jueves: Studied the concept of satire in regards to a calavera. Began to brainstorm and write CALAVERA #2. Viernes: Finished La Tumba and turned in the chapter recap worksheets (10 pts.) Worked some more on CALAVERA #2 and revisions to CALAVERA #1. Here's a description of the PROYECTO DE DIA DE LOS MUERTOS (Calavera #1 y #2, y el imagen de su calavera - Due on Friday of next week, with the two days before Exhibicion as catch up time.) [Rubric is currently under construction.] Aquí está el LINK a las calaveras escribidas en las clases hoy.
Lunes: We worked on how to talk about the future using Ir + a + infinitive. Here's a Trabajo Corto about IR. We also added to our knowledge of lugares y profesiones and filled out a vocabulary list involving these two (places and professions). Then we read one more chapter of La Tumba. Martes: Trabajamos sobre IR + A + Infinitivos para hablar del futuro. Aquí está el Trabajo Corto de 20 de Oct. Then we studied and read about what a Calavera is, and then began to write one of our own. LINK to the questions. I will check DP's on Monday (19 de oct) afternoon.
Stem changing verbs! Here's a link to a list of some more Stem-changing verbs. On WEDNESDAY, we conjugated for "yo" for each one of these verbs. Please PRINT a copy and write the "yo" forms. We also wrote out the story of El Muchacho Pastor, or El Cuento De Juan, using simply our notes from our cuadernos (no computers, and you can't use the written out story of El Muchacho Pastor). This was worth 10 pts. On Thursday, we did some corrections. Please try this presentation! Then we learned more about Dia de los Muertos. Please Read these two LINKS: About Skulls and about Jose Guadalupe Posada (which will help you figure out your proyecto that's coming up!) Friday: Doing a reflection from the Que raro que soy proyecto on our D.P.'s and watching half of a movie! Hoy, contamos El Cuento de Juan. The reason for this is to practice using stem-changing verbs in a useful way. Here's the LINK to El Cuento de Juan. You need to make a set of 6 squares on a piece of paper and draw pictures that correspond to the story. See if you can figure it out when you read the story. Then try to tell the story without reading it! Then we read Cap. 4 or 5 in La Tumba and answered some preguntas. I will collect these answers when we finish. Hoy trabajamos sobre los verbos de cambio radical (STEM-CHANGING VERBS also called BOOT VERBS).
12 más 35 son 47, 53 menos 22 son 31, etc (Más = more, plus and menos = less, minus) ASSIGNMENT: Finish el trabajo above, using the Presentación to guide you (all answers will become clear if you watch this presentation.) ALSO, bring in a photo or image of the person you are planning to celebrate on our ofrendas for Dia de los Muertos. Conquest of Mexico Article Please read this! Know who Hernan Cortés is, when this happened, and think about the repercussions.
We'll be having a discussion about the conquest of Mexico and it's resulting impact on Mexico and how the religions coalesced into the Catholicism and traditions we see today in Mexico, including Dia de los Muertos. Here's a link to some myths about Dia de los Muertos that are good to think about, especially if any of this makes you uncomfortable. Here's is the LINK to the outline of the Dia de Los Muertos Proyecto. |
